Is less more in qigong? Let the debate begin!

It occurred to me the other day that many beginning Qigong students are very concerned with learning a myriad of qigong forms! I think this may be a mistake. The masters that I studied with always agreed that less is more. In other words it’s better to learn one or two sets and learn them really well, concentrating on proper form and engaging the inner feelings and imagination (mind body connection). Some old masters would have one practice that they would practice every day concentrating on proper form to achieve desired results. What do you think?

Wondering what Qigong is?

Here is a great video from the World Congress on Qigong 2010. Great info on the scientific research that is being done from a western prospective about why it works!

Standing Like a Tree! What is this Standing Practice?

Zhan Zhuang Standing Practice

Timothy Booth in the first Standing Meditation Posture

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of standing practice and it came to mind to write an article on what exactly is standing practice (Zhan Zhuang). This is definitely one of the greatest gifts from the internal practices. So simple and yet so powerful. It is a way of developing better balance and alignment, stronger legs and waist, deeper respiration, accurate body mindfulness and tranquility. In “Standing Post” (Zhan Zhuang) one meditates while standing holding certain prescribed postures observing the natural flow of the breath what could be simpler and yet  profound in more advance practice. The Powers of the Universe – How does this relate to Qigong? Part 2

Here is part 2 of this recent post!

Cataclysm or the destructive process by which new emergence is established is in nature and is a necessary process. I think related to Qigong this is what is going on when we don’t feel well. The body is letting us know that there is a necessary state of imbalance that needs to be addressed and allows for the re-establishment of health by way of vibrant creativity. In more advanced Qigong practice we find ways of being highly attuned to this process in order to adjust what is necessary to stay in a state of balance. Continue reading

The Powers of the Universe – How does this relate to Qigong? Part 1

What are the Powers of the Universe according to the latest research and how do they relate to our practice of Qigong? This is part 1 of a 2 part post. This is based on an article that I recently read by Brian Swimme in which he identifies some of the widely accepted scientific knowledge in physics, astronomy, biology, geology. paleontology and thermodynamics. This post will be in the form of musings that are not intended to be definitive but the basis of discussion and further investigation and inquiry. It is my firm belief that if the practice of Qigong is to evolve along with us it must keep up to the latest scientific research for it to be relevant. Continue reading

How is Energy or Qi moved through the Body?

One of the ways is through the CT or connective tissue. The Connective Tissue in the Body is pervasive. This subtle extremely strong tissue which resembles silk sometimes in sheets sometimes like cables and also surrounding the muscles is called the myo-fascial layer and is everywhere in the body. The nerves are surrounded by this in the perinural connective tissue also the blood vessels (perivascular CT), the lymphatic system (perilymphatic CT) as well as the bones (periosteum). It functionally holds everything in place. It is infused with that highly conductive internal water (conducting electrical impulses) that I spoke about in my last post and is arranged in a framework that is recognized as a liquid crystal lattice. Is water the connection between the living matrix and the Qi Matrix?

The living matrix is approximately 70 percent water (a possible correlate of the Qi Matrix). This water is infused with electro-conductive metals such as iron, manganese, magnesium, sodium, potassium even silver and gold. Our electrical bodies use these metals for conductance. When we move adjusting posture gently we balance and harmonize this internal water within the matrix – the water filled tissues and passageways of the body. This internal water system is propelled and circulated when we deepen the breath, contract the muscles and relax. Water is possibly the bridge between the physical and energetic domains in the human system possibly the interface between the living matrix and the Qi Matrix! Continue reading

Is Bio-energy Qi (chi) ?

What causes the heart beat and the flow of blood through the veins and arteries? William Einthoven a dutch physician in and around 1906 discovered that an electrical charge builds up in the heart and discharges – causing heart beat and blood flow one small portion of a very complex internal bio-electric circuitry.

Recently Dr. Robert Becker, author of the Body Electric, found a perineural control system corresponding to the acupuncture points in Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture at high conductance areas of the body. Continue reading

The Science of the Mind Body Connection!

One of the most dramatic breakthroughs in the physiological domain is the simple effect of the mind mediated through the nervous system to influence the functioning of the immune, endocrine and other systems. In the 1940’s through to now a huge amount of research has been done demonstrating  the incredible power of stress and mood, states of the psyche, on health and disease. The minds effect on immunity, pyschoneuroimmunlogy. got the most attention but the effect of the mind on the heart was also important (psycho-neurocardiology).

As new research came in it became clear that the mind body practices of Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi were quite effective in influencing these moods. The ancients had found practical ways to accomplish this carefully refined over centuries creating homeostasis and balance consciously in the human body. Continue reading

The Illuminating Light of Science on Qi!

[tweetmeme source=”@qigongboy” only_single=false]
That which is looked upon by one generation
as the apex of human knowledge
is often considered an absurdity in the next,
and what is regarded as a superstition in one century,
may form the basis of science for the following one!
–Paracelsus, sixteenth-century European Alchemist

I am starting this discussion on the latest info about the spectrum of equivalents for Qi in the Western View.
Scientific Domain        Qi Equivalent                                               Three Treasures
Physiology                   Structure and Chemistry                                      Jing
Bio-energy                   Internal energies-ions                                          Qi
Bio-field                       Field of energy-magnetic and light                    Qi
Quantum                      Limitless information and consciousness        Shen

There is now pretty convincing evidence that Qi may be the element that organizes all of our bodily functions into a coherent and integrated expression of health and vitality. For decades now we have been aware that there are dynamic relationships between the nervous system and the organ systems, but the level of complexity that science is now recognizing is really astounding. This is leading to research into the effects of intentionally enhancing coherence of these systems through the use of imagery and Qigong practice. Continue reading

What is the Qi Matrix?

Here is a quote from Dr. Roger Jahnke’s great book the Healing Promise of Qi which I think is excellent. “The extraordinary system for absorbing, circulating, and refining Qi in the body is called the Qi Matrix. The Qi Matrix is a pervasive network, the subtle circuitry of your life force. The channels or pathways of Qi meridians or (Jing Luo) deliver the life force to every part of the body as fuel or resource for every function. The Qi Matrix interfaces with the living physiological matrix. It vitalizes blood, enables nerve conductance, sustains organ activity and provides functional capacity for every cell and tissue in the living process. The bio-energetic interface between the Qi Matrix and the physiological matrix is emerging as a key area of twenty-first century science.” Continue reading
